Tax Year Calendar: Important Dates and Deadlines

Filing dates and accounting deadlines can creep up on you, and there’s nothing more frustrating than having to pay a fine that could have been avoided.

Below is a list of tax filing dates and important deadlines for the upcoming tax year.

Take a few minutes to save each relevant filing date to your calendar, and stay ahead of deadlines this year.

 

December 31, 2016

Tax Moves Deadline

Today is the final day to make any tax moves for 2016. Last day to set up a solo 401(k) if you’re self-employed.

 

January 17, 2017

Estimated Quarterly Payments

The fourth (and final) 2016 estimated quarterly payment is due today. Note that you do not have to file this payment due on January 17, 2017, if you file your 2016 tax return by January 31, 2017 and pay the remaining balance owed with your return.

 

January 31, 2017

Send 1099 and W2 Forms to Employees and Independent Contractors

Today is the deadline to fill out and mail all forms 1099 and W-2 to independent contractors and employees, respectively.

 

March 15, 2017

S-Corp and Partnership Returns Due

Today is the deadline to file your S-Corp tax return (form 1120S or Partnership return (1065, or file for an).

 

March 31, 2017

File W2 and 1099 Forms Electronically

If you work with employees, independent contractors, or both, and you’re filing forms online, today is the deadline to electronically file copies of your W-2 and 1099 forms for 2016.

 

April 17, 2017

Individual and C-Corp Tax Returns Due

Today is the deadline to file individual (forms 1040) and C-Corp (forms 1120) tax returns , or file for an extension.

Usually, April 15 is the tax deadline. But in 2017, April 15 falls on a Saturday so taxes are due the following Monday.

Estimated Quarterly Payments

The first 2017 estimated quarterly payment is also due today.

 

June 15, 2017

Estimated Quarterly Payment

The second estimated quarterly payment for 2016 is due today.

 

September 15, 2017

S-Corp and Partnership Returns Due (with Extension)

If you were granted an extension on your 2016 taxes, today is the final deadline to file forms 1120S and 1065.

The third estimated quarterly payment for 2016 is due today.

 

October 16, 2017

Individual and C-Corp Tax Returns Due (with Extension)

If you were granted an extension on your 2016 taxes, today is the final deadline to file forms 1040 and 1120.

 

November 1, 2017

Start Making Year End Tax Moves

If you plan to do so, now is a good time to speak with your accountant to plan any tax moves you will make before 2018.
